Quitting pop and weight loss

Although juice cocktails may contain real juice, they're not helpful for weight loss or for overall health. When you're dieting, your best bet is to drink plain water — it's cheap, widely available and calorie free. But if you're craving carbonation, try sparkling water as a treat. Add flavor to sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon juice, a few crushed raspberries or sliced strawberries, or even some spiral-cut cucumber slices for a fancy-looking beverage with a subtle taste.

Or use herbs and spices — such as mint, basil, cilantro, cinnamon sticks or sliced, fresh ginger — to make flavored water, minus the sugar.

Limit Juice and Juice Cocktails. Alternatives to Soda. Although drinking soda is bad for weight loss — in addition to your overall health — drinking juice isn't much better. Juice does have some essential nutrients, but it's still high in calories, which may interfere with your weight loss. In some cases, juice can be higher in calories than soda. For example, a ounce serving of unsweetened grape juice sets you back calories, which is significantly more than the calories found in the same size serving of cola.

Juice cocktails are also high in calories — a cup of cranberry juice cocktail has calories — and often contain added sugar, making them similar to soft drinks in that regard. Stop Drinking Soda: 'Quitting Soda Helped Me Lose 40 Pounds' | Women's Health

Cutting out sugary sodas may trigger weight loss. Tip The amount of weight you lose on a no-soda diet depends on how much soda you're drinking a day to start. I was always tired — unless fueled with caffeine. Food wouldn't taste good if I didn't have it with a soda.

You'll reduce sugar cravings

And I was always bloated and gassy, which doesn't help when you're trying to go out on dates. So two days before my 28th birthday, I decided to give up the drink for a year. Yep, days without soda — would I be able to do it? I wasn't confident with myself, but I wanted to try.

Here are the things that I learned.

Things That Happen When You Stop Drinking Diet Soda

Giving up soda would not be something that would come easy for me. I was dependent on soda. I would drink at least two to three cans a day, sometimes more. The first few weeks were the worst.

I would get really bad cravings and had to figure out ways to keep from drinking it. We have a fridge at work that is full of free soda — this was the worst because it was so readily available.

It's like it was staring at me, tempting me to drink it every time I would need to go past the kitchen. So I stopped going past the kitchen. If I wasn't near it, I didn't have to fight as hard not to drink it. I would stock up on multiple bottles of water in the morning and avoid the kitchen at all costs. One of my greatest accomplishments was making it one month without soda.

When I started, I knew I had to find an alternative. You can't just cut it out cold turkey when you're used to having that much caffeine every day. I began to try different drinks; I switched to teas — iced tea, lemonade, green tea, and hot tea — any type of tea worked. It was how I still got flavor in my life. But after a while, I began to enjoy the tea. Unsweetened tea began to have a flavor, and I actually wanted to drink it.

This led to me also wanting to drink more water.
